Telangana Nurses Protest at OGH Demanding Security After Tukkuguda Murder

The Telangana Nurses Association staged protests on Monday at the Osmania General Hospital campus in Hyderabad, demanding enhanced security, safe accommodation, and stronger workplace safeguards following the murder of 21-year-old nurse V.K. Sirisha in Tukkuguda.

The murder occurred in Tukkuguda, located under the limits of the Pahadeshareef police station. Condemning the fatal attack, members of the nursing association assembled to voice concerns regarding the severe risks faced by healthcare workers across both state-run and private teaching hospitals.

In a memorandum submitted to senior health officials, the association highlighted that healthcare personnel, particularly nurses stationed on the front lines, remain vulnerable without adequate residential safety and institutional lodging safeguards. The association pointed out that nursing staff continuously manage high-risk clinical environments, including intensive care units and emergency wards, leaving them exposed when basic occupational safety measures are neglected by hospital managements.

The association demanded that health authorities ensure tight security, proper changing rooms, individual lockers, adequate resting facilities, and well-lit, secure night accommodations. Representatives emphasized that these provisions are basic working prerequisites rather than optional amenities.

Furthermore, the nursing body called for the establishment of a strict monitoring and compliance mechanism overseen at the Directorate of Medical Education level. Under this proposed system, heads of institutions would be required to submit periodic reports detailing critical safety parameters, including workplace violence protections, night security protocols, and immediate grievance redressal systems to safeguard nursing staff on duty.
