Telangana, Maharashtra Hold Constructive Talks on Proposed Tummidihatti Barrage

The first round of talks between Telangana and Maharashtra over the proposed Tummidihatti barrage across the Pranahita river began on a constructive note on Tuesday, raising hopes of progress on long-pending issues surrounding the project.

The discussions were initiated and facilitated by the Central Water Commission (CWC) to enable a detailed examination of outstanding technical and inter-state matters between the two neighbouring states.

A central focus of the meeting was Telangana's proposal to build the Tummidihatti barrage at a full reservoir level (FRL) of 152 metres. Delegates held extensive discussions on Maharashtra's concerns regarding potential land submergence resulting from the proposed height.

During the meeting, Telangana presented its technical position and shared findings from studies conducted on the likely impact of the project at various levels. The discussions also covered the availability of water from the Pranahita river, as well as the safeguards needed to protect the projects and interests of both states.

Although no final decision was reached during Tuesday's session, officials described the deliberations as constructive and encouraging.

A second round of talks between Telangana and Maharashtra is scheduled to take place in the third week of September to continue negotiations on the barrage.
