Telangana Issues Health Advisory Warning Of Seasonal Illnesses Ahead Of Heavy Rainfall

The Telangana Health department issued a public health advisory on June 24, 2026, warning citizens across the state of a potential surge in seasonal illnesses following weather forecasts of widespread heavy rainfall over the next week. Director of Public Health and Family Welfare B. Ravinder Nayak stated that the expected lower temperatures and increased humidity could lead to a rise in vector-borne, waterborne, and airborne diseases.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rainfall across most areas of Telangana, with several districts likely to experience heavy rain. Isolated places are also expected to witness thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds.
To combat vector-borne diseases like malaria, dengue, and chikungunya, health officials have urged residents to install mosquito screens on doors and windows, use mosquito nets over beds and cribs, and apply mosquito repellents. The advisory also emphasized maintaining drains and septic tanks to prevent water stagnation and recommended observing a 'Friday Dry Day' to clear stagnant water in and around homes.
For waterborne diseases such as acute gastroenteritis, jaundice, and typhoid, the department advised citizens to consume only filtered or boiled water, wash hands regularly before and after meals, and avoid eating stale food sold outside.
To limit the spread of airborne infections, including seasonal viral fevers and influenza, the advisory recommended avoiding shaking hands when sick, using hand sanitizers frequently, and covering the mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing.
The department urged anyone experiencing flu-like symptoms, such as fever, cough, sore throat, headache, and body aches, to immediately seek treatment at the nearest government health facility.
In response to the forecast, the state government has set up special beds, IV fluids, and essential medicines at all public health facilities. Additionally, medicines and ORS sachets have been made available with ANMs, ASHAs, and Anganwadi workers to address any emergencies.
