Telangana Government Renames Road Near US Consulate to Donald Trump Avenue

The Telangana government has officially renamed a prominent road adjoining the US consulate in Hyderabad to "Donald Trump Avenue."

The decision, which was implemented earlier this week, was part of the Freedom 250 celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of American Independence. The move has generated significant public debate and drawn reactions from both the US President and local critics.

US President Donald Trump welcomed the gesture, publicly acknowledging the renaming as a "rare honour." Thanking the Telangana government for the recognition, Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to share his reaction. Along with his message, he posted a photograph of the official unveiling ceremony that took place in Hyderabad.

In his social media post, Trump highlighted the historic nature of the decision, noting that he is the first American president to have a road in India named after him. He expressed his gratitude with a "Thank you!" and described the recognition as an unprecedented honour.

Despite the appreciation from the US President, the renaming has sparked a wave of debate and criticism within the state. Many critics have questioned the appropriateness of honoring Trump, particularly highlighting the challenges faced by Indians regarding US immigration. They pointed out that many Indians continue to deal with uncertainty over increasingly restrictive US immigration policies, as well as reports of rising anti-immigrant sentiment.

Furthermore, some critics argued that the timing of the road renaming was insensitive, pointing to the ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia.

The decision also met with pushback on social media, where several local voices argued against naming landmarks after foreign leaders. Many suggested that roads and public landmarks in Telangana should instead be dedicated to local figures. Specifically, they argued that the government should prioritize honoring local freedom fighters, prominent regional personalities, or individuals who played a key role in the historic Telangana statehood movement.
