Telangana Forms Special Panel to Review Polytechnic Education After Protests

The Telangana government has appointed a special committee headed by senior politician Keshava Rao to review polytechnic education across the state, following protests over moves to bring polytechnic institutions under the Young India Skills University (YISU).

The state government's decision to place all polytechnics under the umbrella of YISU had led to widespread demonstrations by students and staff. The widespread opposition prompted the Chief Minister, upon returning from a visit to London, to constitute the review panel to examine the issue.

YISU was formally established in October 2024 to bridge the gap between academic qualifications and industry requirements, beginning its operations and classes on a temporary campus in November 2024. The university originally aimed to provide employment-focused skill training to students from general intermediate and degree streams, including Arts, Science, and Commerce.

The review committee is chaired by Keshava Rao, an adviser to the government with cabinet-rank status who has previously served as a minister, MLA, and MP.

Other members appointed to the panel include Member of Legislative Council (MLC) Kodandaram, professor Shantha Sinha, and Navin Mittal, an IAS officer holding the rank of Special Chief Secretary. Mittal previously served as the Commissioner for Technical Education and Chairman of the State Board of Technical Education and Training (SBTET).

The panel has been tasked with reviewing the structure and oversight of polytechnic education in Telangana in light of the concerns raised by students and faculty.
