Telangana Directs 42,082 Schools to Roll Out Disability Screening and Green Ratings

HYDERABAD — The Telangana School Education Department has directed all 42,082 schools across the state to roll out two nationwide school initiatives this year, encompassing disability-related screenings and environmental self-assessments.
The directive applies to all government, local body, aided, residential, and private institutions across the state. Under the first initiative, schools will screen children from Pre-Primary through Class XII using the Pre-Assessment Holistic Screening Tool (PRASHAST), developed by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT).
Before conducting the screenings, approximately 3.65 lakh teachers mapped in the UDISE+ database must complete PRASHAST sensitisation and training modules via the designated app or portal by August 31. The screening covers all 21 disability conditions recognised under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.
Under the framework, regular teachers will carry out Part-I screenings using observable indicators. Special Educators will then step in to undertake Part-II verification wherever required. According to the department, the exercise is designed to help educators recognise disability-related needs early and arrange necessary support and referrals without stigma or discrimination.
Simultaneously, schools must register on the Swachh Evam Harit Vidyalaya Rating (SHVR) 2026 portal and complete a self-assessment by September 30. The rating evaluates parameters including school sanitation, safe drinking water, hygiene, waste management, environmental sustainability, and green practices.
According to the department, 10 schools in Telangana received recognition under the Swachh Vidyalaya initiative during 2025-26. Officials expect a higher number of institutions to qualify for national-level honours this year with all 42,082 schools participating.
