Telangana DGP C.V. Anand Announces Eco-Tourism Hub in Karreguttalu

Telangana Director General of Police (DGP) C.V. Anand on Monday announced that Karreguttalu, a remote region along the Telangana–Chhattisgarh border that served as a Maoist stronghold for nearly five decades, will be transformed into an eco-tourism destination. During a visit to the region following recent security force operations, Anand unfurled the National Flag and released pigeons to mark the establishment of peace.

The DGP undertook a 30-kilometre journey into the forested terrain, starting from the Murumuru forward operating base samp and traveling through dense forests to reach Thurpala and Karreguttalu. The route, recently opened with a mud road, required special vehicles to navigate steep hill stretches, rugged paths, and deep valleys. The convoy crossed approximately 12 waterfalls along the scenic landscape, which sits at an altitude of nearly 600 metres.

For decades, civil administration remained out of reach in Karreguttalu due to extremist activity. Sustained anti-Maoist operations conducted by Telangana and Chhattisgarh police weakened the Maoist presence, allowing access to the region. Anand stated that only a small group of around 17 Maoists, including senior leader Muppala Lakshmana Rao, remain active in the area, and he appealed to them to surrender while offering full rehabilitation support.

Outlining development initiatives, the DGP stated that the government is according special priority to the region. A temporary gravel road has been laid up to Tarpala, with plans under consideration to upgrade it into a BT road. Road works connecting Pamur to Chalamadava have already been completed, while projects for electricity and mobile network connectivity are set to be taken up. Development activities will be carried out in line with environmental norms to create local employment opportunities.

During the visit, Anand distributed essential commodities to Gutti Koya families near the Pamur camp and commended the CRPF 196th Battalion for its role in restoring peace. Senior officials from the police, forest, and revenue departments of both Telangana and Chhattisgarh also attended the event.
