Telangana Congress Leaders Lobby for Graduate MLC Seats at Gandhi Bhavan

Lobbying has begun at Gandhi Bhavan in Hyderabad for upcoming Graduates Member of Legislative Council (MLC) elections and Governor quota nominations within the Telangana Congress. The political activity comes after Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy called for giving greater representation to the younger generation in state and central legislative bodies.

The terms of three nominated MLCs—Goreti Venkanna, Boggarapu Dayanand, and Basavaraju Saraiah—are set to end in November this year. Additionally, the terms for Teenmaar Mallanna, representing the Nalgonda-Warangal-Khammam Graduates constituency, and Surabhi Vani Devi, representing the Mahabubnagar-Rangareddy-Hyderabad Graduates constituency, will expire in March 2027.

Although the Congress party has not formally initiated the candidate selection process for the Graduate constituencies or the Governor's quota, senior leaders have started lobbying for the positions. Key names circulating in political circles include Congress Working Committee Special Invitee Vamshichand Reddy, Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee official spokesperson Sama Ram Mohan Reddy, Nalgonda DCC president Punna Kailash, and State Dairy Development Cooperative Federation Limited chairman Gutha Amith Reddy.

The internal debate over party nominations follows Chief Minister Revanth Reddy's remarks during a candlelight rally on July 25. He assured that the state government would pass a resolution during an August Assembly session to seek a relaxation of minimum age limits for contesting elections. The proposal seeks to reduce the minimum age to 21 for the Legislative Assembly and Lok Sabha, and to 25 for the Legislative Council and Rajya Sabha. Currently, the minimum age limits stand at 25 years for the Assembly and Lok Sabha, and 30 years for the Legislative Council and Rajya Sabha.

Speculation is also building at Gandhi Bhavan regarding a proposed Cabinet expansion and reshuffle, with several younger legislators hoping for promotions in line with the Chief Minister's recent emphasis. However, opposition parties have criticized the Chief Minister's assertions, accusing him of trying to garner the support of youngsters while knowing that reducing election age limits for Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Members falls under the domain of the Central government.
