Sudanese Man Regains Mobility After Complex Knee Surgery at Medicover Hospitals

A 36-year-old man from Sudan with a severely disabled left knee has regained the ability to stand and walk following a complex reconstructive procedure at Medicover Hospitals in Hitec City, Hyderabad.

The patient had sustained an injury three years ago that severely impaired his leg. Although he had undergone several surgical procedures in Sudan, the knee had fused into a fixed, bent position. The joint was stiff, painful, and entirely unable to straighten, complicated further by extensive internal scarring and an old, badly broken kneecap.

Dr Koteshwara Prasad Veeragandham, senior Orthopaedic and Joint Replacement Surgeon at Medicover Hospitals, formulated a specialised treatment plan to address the extensive damage. Because the surrounding tissue had heavy scarring from previous operations, surgical teams first performed corrective procedures to prepare the joint area.

Following the preparatory work, surgeons carried out a hinged total knee replacement. The hinged replacement is a specialised implant designed for cases where a patient's natural bone structure and ligaments are no longer able to provide necessary joint stability.

Dr Veeragandham stated that the procedure successfully restored the alignment, stability, and range of movement in the patient's left knee despite the severe scarring. The patient experienced an uncomplicated post-operative recovery and has since commenced a structured rehabilitation programme to support his mobility.
