Stormwater Drain Works Block Ameerpet Road and Cause Severe Traffic Jam

On 1 June 2026, stormwater drain widening works undertaken by Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials triggered severe traffic congestion on the busy SR Nagar–Mythrivanam stretch in Ameerpet, Hyderabad. The construction work blocked more than 40 percent of the road, causing significant delays for commuters.

The disruption occurred on a portion of the stormwater drain adjacent to the Swarna Jayanti Complex in Ameerpet, which houses the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) head office. As a result of the excavation, vehicles slowed down significantly, leading to a traffic jam that lasted for three hours and impacted the flow of traffic in and around Ameerpet.

A GHMC engineering official explained that the widening works on the existing stormwater drain are necessary to ensure the smooth flow of drainage water and prevent overflow during the upcoming monsoon.

According to the official, similar drainage works were successfully completed on the opposite side of the site a few months ago. The current phase of the project is expected to be finished in a week or two.

To ensure public safety, the GHMC has barricaded the dug-up area and set up caution signboards along the stretch to alert drivers.
