SIT to Penalize Hyderabad Police Officers for Lapses Leading to Acquittals

The Hyderabad Police Special Investigation Team (SIT) has conducted a Prosecution Review Committee Meeting at the SIT office in Hyderabad to address critical gaps in law enforcement. The meeting was held to analyze the specific lapses, deficiencies, and procedural gaps in both police investigations and prosecutions that recently resulted in the acquittal of accused individuals in several grave cases.

The high-level review meeting was chaired by M. Srinivas, IPS, who serves as the Additional Commissioner of Police for Crimes & SIT. The session brought together key stakeholders from the legal and law enforcement sectors of the city, including legal advisors, public prosecutors, and assistant public prosecutors. Station House Officers (SHOs) representing various police stations under the Hyderabad police commissionerate were also in attendance to address the shortcomings in their respective cases.

During the session, the committee conducted a highly detailed review of grave acquittal cases that occurred specifically during the months of January and March 2026. Participants closely evaluated each case to determine why the prosecution failed to secure convictions in court.

According to Additional Commissioner M. Srinivas, the committee thoroughly examined the specific reasons for each acquittal. This included identifying the exact deficiencies and gaps present in the investigation stage, which is handled by the police, as well as the prosecution stage, which is managed by the legal teams in court.

To ensure accountability, the joint committee has taken a formal decision to issue strictures to the concerned officers whose investigative lapses directly led to the acquittal of these grave cases.

In addition to holding individual officers accountable, the committee members engaged in comprehensive discussions regarding the implementation of necessary corrective measures. These corrective steps are designed to prevent the recurrence of similar investigative and legal lapses in the future. The ultimate goal of these measures is to significantly enhance the overall quality and effectiveness of police investigations and prosecutions across the Hyderabad police commissionerate.
