Security Guard Assaulted at NIMS Emergency Wing in Hyderabad

A security personnel was allegedly assaulted and healthcare workers were threatened at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad in the early hours of Monday, August 31. The altercation erupted after the attendant of a patient brought to the hospital's Emergency Department with no signs of life verbally abused on-duty doctors and staff.

The incident took place at around 12.30 a.m. inside the Red Triage area of the NIMS Emergency Department. In an official statement, the NIMS Resident Doctors Association (RDA) clarified that the medical team on duty attended to the patient appropriately and that there was no reported delay or lapse in clinical care.

According to the RDA, the patient’s attendant subjected doctors and other healthcare personnel to repeated verbal abuse and threatening behaviour, which included the use of vulgar language. The individual reportedly attempted to intimidate the medical staff on duty by claiming to have political connections and influence.

The situation escalated further when the person was permitted to head towards the first floor of the facility. While on the first floor, the individual physically assaulted and injured a security personnel on duty.

The NIMS RDA strongly condemned the assault, describing the episode as a grave threat to the safety, security, and dignity of healthcare professionals. The association expressed serious concern over the responsiveness and adequacy of current security arrangements within the Emergency Department. It stressed that aggressive individuals must be identified, controlled, and removed from critical patient-care areas immediately, involving police intervention whenever required.

The doctors' association has submitted several key demands to the hospital administration. It has called on the NIMS management to launch an immediate formal inquiry into the episode, secure all relevant CCTV footage for review, and conduct an investigation into the reported security lapse.

Furthermore, the RDA sought proper documentation and a complete medical evaluation of the injured security personnel, alongside appropriate medico-legal and police action. The association also urged hospital authorities to immediately strengthen security arrangements across the Emergency Department, with specific focus on the Red Triage area.
