Secunderabad Cantonment Board Approves Renaming of 21 British-Era Roads

The Secunderabad Cantonment Board has approved the renaming of 21 British-era roads and four bazaar areas within the Secunderabad Cantonment. The decision, aimed at removing colonial-era legacies, was passed during a board meeting on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, with full implementation expected to be completed within a month.
The board meeting was chaired by Board President Brigadier S Rajeev. During the session, the board members finalized the list of new names, choosing to honor Indian historical figures, national leaders, and military heroes who fought in wars and sacrificed their lives for the country.
SCB Chief Executive Officer Arvind Kumar Dwivedi confirmed that the board approved the new names during the meeting. He stated that the process of removing the colonial-era signs from the existing roads and installing the updated name boards will be carried out and completed within a month.
Several major roads in the cantonment area will undergo immediate name changes. Under the newly approved plan, Lytton Road will be renamed Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Road, while Burton Road will be known as Santosh Babu Marg.
Additionally, Bolton Road is set to be renamed Atal Bihar Vajpayee Marg, and Noble Road will be changed to APJ Abdul Kalam Marg.
Apart from these 21 road stretches, the board also approved renaming four bazaar areas located within the cantonment limits. The old British-era names of these commercial spaces will be replaced to honor brave Indian military officers and soldiers.
This local renaming initiative follows a broader national directive. The Ministry of Defence had originally proposed renaming roads across all 62 Cantonment Boards in India in 2021. The central proposal aimed to phase out names of roads and buildings that were originally dedicated to British officers and soldiers loyal to the British Crown during the colonial era.
