SCR Records 21 Train Accidents on Non-Kavach Routes in 10 Years

South Central Railway recorded 21 consequential train accidents on sections lacking the Kavach automatic train protection system between 2016-17 and 2025-26, with the Secunderabad division logging the highest share of incidents, according to official information furnished under the Right to Information Act.

The data was released by the SCR Safety Branch on September 1, 2026, in response to an RTI application filed by applicant Robin Zaccheus on August 24. The disclosure provides a 10-year snapshot across the railway zone's network.

Among SCR’s six railway divisions, the Secunderabad division recorded the highest number of consequential train accidents on non-Kavach tracks, accounting for nine of the 21 incidents. The Hyderabad division followed with five accidents, while Vijayawada recorded four. Guntakal reported two accidents and Guntur recorded one. The Nanded division did not record any consequential train accidents on sections without Kavach during the decade.

The RTI response highlighted annual variations across the 10-year span. SCR recorded one accident in 2016-17, three in 2017-18, and two in 2018-19. The number peaked in 2019-20 with six accidents, representing the highest annual total in the period. Those six accidents in 2019-20 were distributed across Secunderabad and Guntakal divisions with two each, and Vijayawada and Hyderabad divisions with one each.

Accident figures subsequently declined to one in 2020-21, while no consequential accidents occurred in 2021-22. The numbers rose to three in 2022-23, followed by two accidents each in 2023-24 and 2024-25, and one in 2025-26.

According to the railway authorities, no consequential train accidents have been reported on non-Kavach sections during the current 2026-27 financial year up to the date of the response.
