SCB to launch Animal Birth Control centre in Secunderabad Cantonment

The Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) will launch its long-awaited Animal Birth Control (ABC) centre in the Secunderabad Cantonment area on Wednesday, July 1, 2026. This initiative is designed to address the growing population of stray dogs through a systematic capture, sterilisation, and release programme.

The decision to operationalise the centre was finalised during a recent SCB board meeting. The issue of the rising canine population was brought to the forefront by Malkajgiri MP Eatala Rajender and Secunderabad Cantonment MLA N. Sriganesh. Both public representatives raised serious concerns regarding the increasing number of stray dogs in the area and urged the board to accord immediate priority to the matter.

Responding to these concerns, SCB Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Arvind Kumar Dwivedi informed the board members that the ABC centre is fully scheduled to begin its operations on July 1. To facilitate the smooth functioning of the drive, the board has arranged for the deployment of a qualified veterinarian along with a dedicated dog-catching team.

According to Dwivedi, the operations will strictly follow established guidelines. Under the program's guidelines, the dog-catching team will capture stray dogs from different parts of the cantonment. These dogs will then be sterilised at the new centre in strict accordance with the prescribed ABC protocol. Following the medical procedure and recovery, the dogs will be released back into the exact localities from where they were originally picked up.

This initiative is aimed at controlling the stray dog population through sterilisation rather than relocation, which is in line with the standard ABC Rules. The SCB expects that the commencement of this facility will significantly strengthen its administrative capacity to undertake consistent and systematic sterilisation drives across all parts of the cantonment area.
