Samantha's Maa Inti Bangaaram Earns 4.71 Crore Share as Tamil Version Struggles

Samantha’s new bilingual film, 'Maa Inti Bangaaram', registered a strong opening weekend across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, securing a 4.71 Crore share worldwide on its first day. While the Telugu version emerged as a major box office success, the film's Tamil version, 'Engal Thangam', struggled with low occupancy and disappointing collections in Tamil Nadu.
The film easily surpassed its worldwide break-even target of 3 Crore on its opening day, registering a sensational opening across the globe. Following positive word of mouth and high weekend demand, exhibitors in the Telugu states added extra shows and screens on the second day of its release. Samantha, who plays the lead role, also chose not to sell the movie on a Non-Refundable Advance (NRA) basis in any distribution territory.
Despite the strong performance in Telugu-speaking states and overseas markets, the Tamil Nadu release failed to build momentum over the weekend of June 19 to 21. Trade circles had expected respectable numbers given the relatively low break-even targets, but theater occupancy remained below expectations and failed to show anticipated growth.
Industry analysts attribute the poor performance of 'Engal Thangam' to a lack of aggressive marketing. The promotional campaign in Tamil Nadu was limited to a single promotional event, which failed to create sufficient awareness among local moviegoers.
Additionally, Samantha’s reduced presence in the Tamil film industry over the past three to four years is believed to have affected the movie's reach among younger audiences. While she remains a popular name, the gap between her recent Tamil releases slowed down the film's initial pull in the state.
While 'Maa Inti Bangaaram' continues to perform well in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, distributors are hoping that positive word-of-mouth will help improve the film's trajectory in Tamil Nadu in the coming days.
