Retired Army Officer and Civic Activist Major G. Shiva Kiran Passes Away in Kondapur

Major G. Shiva Kiran, a 61-year-old retired army officer and prominent civic activist, passed away on Thursday night, June 25, 2026, at a private hospital in Kondapur, Hyderabad. He died at approximately 10:10 PM following an illness related to a pancreas-linked tumor operation. His sudden demise has drawn widespread condolences from local civic groups, environmentalists, and social activists across the city.
Major Shiva Kiran had been undergoing treatment at the Kondapur hospital following a complaint of a pancreas-linked tumor operation. According to reports, his health deteriorated suddenly on Thursday night. He is survived by his family, including two daughters who reside in Kundan Bagh.
A highly respected figure in Hyderabad's civic circles, Major Shiva Kiran was the founder of Sukuki Exnora, an NGO that pioneered sustainable waste management practices, including garbage collection and segregation, during the days of the erstwhile Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad (MCH).
Through his work with Sukuki Exnora, he focused heavily on the welfare of ragpickers and established 50 decentralized Zero Waste Projects across Hyderabad. He was also instrumental in creating a Swachh Auto Trolley network consisting of 4,500 trolleys operating across the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) area.
In addition to his waste management initiatives, Major Shiva Kiran founded the Geo Map Society and took the lead in establishing the 'Map Room' in Telangana. He was also actively involved in strengthening residential welfare associations (RWAs), working to network them and bring them together on a common platform to address local issues.
Following the news of his passing, the Forum for a Better Hyderabad (FBH) expressed deep condolences. FBH Chairman, Prof. Veda Kumar Manikonda, released a statement describing Major Shiva Kiran as a distinguished social activist. Prof. Manikonda praised his tireless efforts in promoting sustainable waste management, supporting and rehabilitating ragpickers, and working to improve civic infrastructure and environmental awareness throughout Hyderabad.
