Resplice Foundation to Host Free SSPE Medical Screening Camp in Manikonda

Resplice Foundation to Host Free SSPE Medical Screening Camp in Manikonda

The Resplice Autism Research Foundation announced on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, that it has launched a new research initiative to study and prevent Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis (SSPE), a rare and fatal neurological complication linked to measles. As part of this initiative, the foundation will host a free medical screening camp in Manikonda, Hyderabad, to identify eligible participants and gather critical data.

Led by Dr. Chandrashekhar Thodupunuri, the research initiative aims to understand the underlying factors of SSPE. The condition is a progressive and highly destructive neurological disorder caused by a persistent, mutated measles virus. It typically manifests years after the initial measles infection. Currently, there is no known cure for SSPE, and the disease carries a mortality rate of nearly 100 percent. Children who contract measles before the age of five face a significantly higher risk of developing the condition.

The upcoming medical camp, scheduled for Sunday, August 9, 2026, in Manikonda, will serve as a key data-gathering event for the research team. The foundation is actively seeking participants for the screening. Eligible candidates include children who have suspected SSPE, a documented history of measles, or those who are currently experiencing neurological regression after a measles infection or an MMR vaccination.

During the camp, the medical team plans to perform multiple advanced diagnostic evaluations on the participants. These will include genomic, immune, and microbiome evaluations. By analyzing these factors, the researchers hope to identify specific host susceptibility factors that make certain children vulnerable to the disease, ultimately aiding in early prediction and prevention.

Dr. Thodupunuri stated that the foundation's goal is to understand why only some children develop this devastating condition.
