Researcher Urges Conservation of Rare Ancient Hero Stones in Toopran

History researcher Karipe Rajkumar has urged local authorities and residents to conserve rare ancient hero stones and medieval inscriptions surviving in Toopran. Rajkumar, who serves as deputy director in the Audit department of Karimnagar district, highlighted several historic relics from the Rashtrakuta and Kalyani Chalukya eras that offer critical insights into ritual devotion, royal patronage, and martial valour in medieval Telangana.

Among the prominent findings in Toopran is an eighth-century CE Siditala Veeragallu, or hero stone, located on the premises of the local Rama temple. The stone sculpture commemorates a warrior who sacrificed his life for his village and its people or in pursuit of moksha. The detailed carving depicts the warrior tying his hair to the tip of a bent bamboo pole fixed to the ground before severing his own head with a sword.

A second eighth-century hero stone stands on the premises of a private school in Toopran. It portrays a warrior riding a horse, holding a sword in his right hand and reins in his left. A neck ornament visible on the figure suggests that the warrior belonged to a royal family.

On the same school premises, a third hero stone depicts a warrior prepared for combat, holding a sword in his right hand with his left fist clenched—a feature described as uncommon in similar period sculptures. An 11th-century Nandi statue also remains preserved on the same site.

Toopran also houses a royal land grant inscription, known as a Raja Dana Sasanam, issued on December 24, 1112 CE, by Kalyani Chalukya ruler Tribhuvanamalla Deva. The inscription records the official grant of land and tax revenues for dhupa, deepa, and naivedya rituals at the Nakareshwara Swamy temple. Additionally, the historic record made financial provisions for Jain and Shaiva monks and included praises for commander Dandanayaka Gundanayya.

Rajkumar noted that the physical remains and inscriptions demonstrate that Toopran once flourished under ancient royal patronage, sustained by agricultural activities and an extensive network of lakes and ponds. He has appealed to both officials and the local community to conserve the hero stones, inscriptions, and stone sculptures to protect Toopran's rich historical heritage.
