Proposal Initiated to Develop Malkajgiri Railway Station into Mini Terminal

The South Central Railway’s Hyderabad Division has initiated a fresh proposal to transform the Malkajgiri railway junction, located in the Malkajgiri area of Hyderabad, into a secondary mini terminal. The initiative aims to address long-standing infrastructure demands from rail commuters while providing the railway administration with additional operational flexibility for managing trains originating from or terminating within the Hyderabad region.

Under the fresh proposal, the development planned at Malkajgiri includes the construction of additional railway tracks, loop lines, and various other supporting infrastructure facilities. These upgrades are designed to distribute train movements more effectively across the network and reduce operational congestion at the existing Kacheguda Terminal, particularly during peak operating hours.

If the proposal is officially implemented, Malkajgiri Junction could potentially function as a starting or terminating point for selected passenger and express train services. Commuters and railway users in the region have specifically requested direct connectivity from Malkajgiri toward key destinations, including Kurnool City and Nizamabad, alongside other routes.

Beyond long-distance passenger services, the expanded infrastructure at Malkajgiri is expected to open up scope for operating additional Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS) services in different directions. This increase in local train frequency is intended to improve suburban connectivity for daily commuters living and working in the rapidly developing neighbourhoods around the junction.

The plan to establish Malkajgiri as a secondary railway terminal for the Hyderabad Division is a revival of a concept originally mooted several years ago. At that time, owing to various administrative considerations, the terminal development project was shifted to Charlapalli, where terminal work was subsequently undertaken.

Despite the initial shift to Charlapalli, passenger organizations in the locality continued to advocate for the expansion of the Malkajgiri station. Groups such as the Train Travellers Association, Malkajgiri, have spent several years actively pursuing the construction of an additional platform, extra tracks, and enhanced amenities for passengers. The submission of this renewed proposal follows frequent site inspections conducted by senior railway officials and sustained representations submitted by the association and local rail users.
