Police Book 982 Drunk Driving Cases Across Hyderabad and Neighbouring Commissionerates

Traffic police across Hyderabad and its neighbouring commissionerates booked 982 motorists for drunk driving during special enforcement drives conducted over the weekend, with two-wheeler riders making up the majority of violators.

Hyderabad Traffic Police booked 404 motorists during a two-day special drive held on August 21 and 22. In Cyberabad, police apprehended 261 motorists during their weekend enforcement drive. Among the violations in Cyberabad, two-wheelers accounted for 215 cases, followed by 38 four-wheelers, five three-wheelers, and three heavy vehicles.

In the Malkajgiri Commissionerate, traffic police booked 241 motorists during an enforcement drive conducted from August 16 to 22. Future City Traffic Police booked 76 offenders during operations carried out between August 15 and 21.

Police stated that all offenders would be produced before the courts and warned that strict action against drunk driving would continue. Enforcement authorities across Cyberabad, Future City, and Malkajgiri noted that motorists driving under the influence of alcohol who cause fatal accidents can be booked under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The legal provision carries a maximum punishment of up to 10 years of imprisonment along with a fine.

Courts also disposed of earlier drunk driving cases across the commissionerates. In Cyberabad, courts settled 232 cases between August 17 and 22, directing six offenders to perform social service alongside paying fines, while 226 others were fined.

In Malkajgiri, 168 cases were disposed of between August 16 and 22, resulting in one offender receiving jail time and a fine, 20 receiving fines with community social service, and 147 being fined. In Future City, courts disposed of 61 cases between August 15 and 21, ordering seven offenders to pay fines and undertake social service, while 44 were penalised with fines.

Police confirmed that special enforcement operations will continue across the commissionerates and appealed to motorists to cooperate with traffic personnel on duty.
