Parents of Nikitha Godishala Seek US Answers After Accused Arrested in Agra

The parents of 27-year-old Nikitha Godishala, a Hyderabad woman who was murdered in the United States, have called the arrest of the accused an "important breakthrough" while appealing to US authorities for clear answers and greater transparency regarding their daughter's death.

The accused, 26-year-old Arjun Sharma, was tracked down and arrested at a flat in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, by a team of Hyderabad police on August 24.

Godishala was found dead with stab wounds inside Sharma's apartment in Columbia on January 3. Her body was discovered a day after Sharma filed a missing person complaint with local police, claiming he had last seen her on December 31. Investigators subsequently established that Sharma fled the US on a flight to India just hours after submitting the complaint.

Reacting to the arrest, Godishala's family stated that the development is "a beginning, not the end." The family expressed gratitude to the Government of India, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), the police, and supporters, noting that they had made nearly 200 phone calls and pursued multiple avenues to ensure the case moved forward.

The parents emphasised that they are seeking the complete truth about the circumstances of the murder. They also raised serious concerns regarding communication from US authorities, pointing out that they were never officially notified that Nikitha's body was found inside a suitcase and had to learn the detail through media reports.

According to the family, Sharma had borrowed money from Godishala, who resided in Ellicott City, as well as from other family members after losing his job in the US. Financial disputes regarding the money owed to Nikitha had surfaced prior to her death, and Sharma reportedly had financial dealings with others in the US as well.

The family has urged investigators in both India and the US to thoroughly scrutinise communications, financial transactions, and account and mobile phone activity linked to Nikitha before and after her death to establish evidence in the case.
