Over 800 Retired TGSRTC Officers Face Pension and Benefit Delays in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD — Retired officers of the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) in Hyderabad have flagged severe delays in the settlement of their retirement benefits, revealing that more than 800 former officials are yet to receive their dues. To highlight their grievances, the TGSRTC Retired Officers Welfare Association has scheduled a press conference for Sunday.

The association, which represents retired officers of TGSRTC and those of the erstwhile APSRTC allotted to the corporation after bifurcation, stated that these payment delays have now persisted for a decade.

Historically, all retirement benefits due to employees and officers were paid on the day of their superannuation during their farewell functions. However, the association stated that TGSRTC stopped this practice ten years ago, citing financial constraints. Currently, retired employees, supervisors, and officers are not receiving their eligible dues on time, and the management has not announced any advance schedule to clear the arrears.

Because of these persistent delays, the association has had to change its primary function. Originally established as a social platform for periodic interactions among former colleagues, it has been compelled to act as a grievance forum and a bridge between the retirees and TGSRTC's top management to help resolve outstanding issues.

The association stated that the delays have increased over the years, causing deep uncertainty and distress among retired staff. Individual representations submitted to the authorities have often gone unresolved for years. With arrears running into lakhs of rupees for each retiree, many former officials are struggling to manage their daily expenses.

According to the association, TGSRTC authorities have cited the corporation’s severe financial losses as the reason for the unpaid dues. Furthermore, the association noted that the government has not fully or timely reimbursed TGSRTC for providing free bus travel to women, a scheme that has been in place since December 2023.

The lack of timely payments has severely affected the financial stability of the retirees. Without their pensions and benefits, many retired employees have been forced to borrow money at high interest rates to meet basic expenses, while others are unable to fund their children’s weddings or education.
