Osmania General Hospital Performs India's First Five-Organ Transplant Surgery

Doctors at the government-run Osmania General Hospital (OGH) in Hyderabad have performed a historic 36-hour marathon surgery to transplant five organs onto a single patient. The multi-visceral transplant, which is claimed as India's first, began on Monday, June 29, 2026, and concluded on the evening of Tuesday, June 30, 2026.

The recipient of the organs is a 30-year-old engineer from the Sircilla district of Telangana, who had been suffering from a rare and life-threatening condition. According to hospital officials, the patient is currently recovering well following the procedure.

During the complex surgery, the medical team successfully transplanted a stomach, duodenum, pancreas, small intestine, and right colon onto the patient. All five organs were sourced from a single female donor who had been declared brain dead at the hospital. In addition to the five transplanted organs, the donor's eyes, skin, liver, and kidney were also donated to help other patients.

The OGH transplant team was led by hospital Superintendent Dr. Rakesh Sahay and the Head of Surgical Gastroenterology, Dr. C.H. Madhusudhan. The marathon procedure required a collaborative effort from multiple medical specialities, including the departments of Nephrology, Urology, Surgical Gastroenterology, and Anesthesia.

To ensure the success of the rare procedure, the OGH doctors consulted with international medical specialists who had prior experience performing similar multi-visceral surgeries in other countries. Dr. Madhusudhan noted that successfully performing a multi-visceral transplantation had long been a dream for the surgical team.

Telangana Health Minister C. Damodar Rajanarasimha commended the medical team on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, which coincided with National Doctor's Day. He congratulated the doctors for scripting a new chapter in India's medical history and stated that the extraordinary achievement showcased the exceptional skill, dedication, and commitment of the state's government doctors.
