Nurse Accused of Double Murder Dies by Suicide in Vikarabad

A 25-year-old nurse who was out on bail after being arrested for allegedly murdering her parents died by suicide in Yacharam of Bantwaram mandal in Vikarabad district, police said on Monday.

Nakka Surekha, who had been facing trial for double murder, died within Dharur police station limits on Sunday night by self-administering a sedative injection. She had been released on bail on July 31.

According to Dharur Station House Officer Ch. Raghuram, Surekha had worked at a private hospital in Sangareddy after finishing her General Nursing and Midwifery course. On January 28, Dharur police arrested her for the murders of her mother, Nakka Lakshmi, and father, Nakka Dashrath.

Vikarabad DSP Srinivas Reddy said Surekha had stolen sleeping pills and sedatives from the hospital on January 24 after her parents opposed her marriage plans. That night, she injected her mother under the pretext of providing knee pain relief, and later convinced her father to take the same injection, telling him it would relieve fatigue from fieldwork. Both parents died in their sleep.

The following morning, Surekha claimed to neighbours that her parents were unresponsive. Her brother, Nakka Ashok, grew suspicious and lodged a police complaint. Postmortem examinations confirmed high dosages of sedatives as the cause of death, leading to her arrest following a confession.

Following her suicide, Ashok initially refused to claim Surekha's body, but relented after persuasion from his uncle Yadiah and other family members. Police have handed over the body to the family and registered a case of suspicious death under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
