NMC Approves 810 New MBBS Seats in Telangana for 2026-27 Academic Year

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved an increase of 810 MBBS seats across government, private, and deemed medical colleges in Telangana for the 2026–27 academic year. The major expansion, which includes seat increases in Hyderabad, Nizamabad, Mahabubnagar, Siddipet, and Adilabad, will raise the total number of MBBS seats in the state from 8,840 to 9,650. This decision is expected to significantly boost opportunities for medical aspirants and strengthen the state's medical education infrastructure.

According to the latest seat matrix released by the NMC, the 810 newly added seats are distributed across different categories of institutions. Government medical colleges in the state have been allotted 110 of these seats, while private institutions received the largest share with 600 seats. Deemed universities have been granted an additional 100 seats. All of these newly approved seats will be filled through the NEET counselling process for the upcoming academic year.

The expansion features several district-level enhancements for government-run institutions. In Nizamabad, the Government Medical College has been allotted 30 additional seats, which brings its total intake capacity to 150. The college initially commenced operations in 2013 with an intake of 100 seats, which was later expanded to 120. In addition to the undergraduate expansion, the college authorities in Nizamabad are currently awaiting final approval for 17 more postgraduate seats across various departments.

Similarly, the Government Medical College in Mahabubnagar has received approval for an additional 25 MBBS seats. This increase will be implemented starting from the current academic year, raising the college's total intake capacity from its current level to 175 seats.

Other government institutions in the state have also benefited from the NMC's approvals. The government medical college in Siddipet has been granted 25 additional seats, while the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Adilabad has secured approval for 30 additional seats.

Officials stated that this widespread expansion aligns directly with NMC norms aimed at bolstering medical education infrastructure. Currently, Telangana operates a total of 66 medical colleges, which includes 36 government institutions and 30 private medical colleges.
