Nizamabad Doctor Dr. Vishal Akula Selected for National IMA Rural Services Award

Dr. Vishal Akula, the Professor and Head of the Department of Psychiatry at the Government Medical College in Nizamabad, has been selected for the prestigious Dr. Ketan Desai Aao Gaon Chalen Award (Rural Services). The national honor is awarded by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), which is the country’s largest professional organization of doctors.

The senior neuropsychiatrist and drug de-addiction specialist was chosen for his outstanding contributions to rural healthcare, community mental health services, de-addiction initiatives, and public health awareness. The award recognizes his dedicated service to society over the years, particularly in addressing mental health challenges in rural areas.

Dr. Akula is scheduled to receive the award during the National Doctors’ Day awards ceremony on July 18, 2026. The presentation ceremony will be held at the Constitution Club of India in New Delhi, in the presence of the IMA's national leadership.

Currently serving in Nizamabad, Dr. Akula also holds the position of president-elect of the Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS) Telangana State Branch.

Following the announcement, Dr. Akula dedicated the honor to his patients, colleagues, students, and all healthcare professionals who work to improve mental healthcare and rural health services. He expressed his gratitude to the state and national-level members of the IMA for conferring the national honor. He also reaffirmed his commitment to continue serving society with compassion, scientific excellence, and community-oriented healthcare initiatives.
