NIT Warangal Launches Faculty Programme to Support Student Mental Well-Being

On Monday, the National Institute of Technology Warangal (NIT-W) inaugurated a two-day Faculty Upgradation Programme focused on mental health at the Ambedkar Learning Centre in Warangal. Titled "Strengthening Student Mental Well-being, Mentoring and Positive Campus Culture," the initiative aims to equip educators with the skills needed to support students and foster a compassionate academic environment.
The programme, organised by the Centre for Mental Health and Wellness, has drawn participation from around 370 faculty members.
Speaking at the inaugural session, NIT-W Director Prof. Bidyadhar Subudhi stated that an institution’s true strength lies not just in academic excellence and research, but in the care and support it provides to its students. He noted that the institute has consistently promoted holistic student development through structured mentoring, counselling, and wellness initiatives.
Prof. Subudhi added that building a compassionate campus is a shared responsibility, with faculty members playing a crucial role in creating an environment where students feel valued, supported, and empowered to succeed. He said the programme would help build a healthier, more inclusive academic ecosystem.
Prof. G. Amba Prasad Rao also addressed the gathering, highlighting the need to strengthen faculty mentoring and promote student well-being through a positive campus culture. Dean of Student Welfare Prof. K. Kiran Kumar added that student well-being is fundamental to academic success, calling for an inclusive and empathetic learning environment.
During the event, Shri Girija Shankar Das delivered a keynote address on the topic "Lead Yourself Before Leading Others." He advised faculty members to cultivate self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and purpose-driven leadership, noting that compassionate educators play a vital role in shaping confident and resilient students.
On the second day of the programme, experts from the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad and YourDOST will conduct sessions. These sessions will focus on emotional intelligence, institutional mental health support, and student mentoring practices.
