NIMS Resident Doctors Demand Inquiry After Patient Attendant Assaults Security Guard

The Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad has sought a formal inquiry and police action following an incident of verbal abuse, threats, and physical assault at the hospital's Emergency Department.

According to the RDA, the incident occurred at around 12.30 am on Monday in the hospital's Red Triage area. A patient was brought to the emergency unit showing no signs of life. The association stated that on-duty doctors attended to the patient immediately, with no delay or lapse in medical care.

Following the examination, an attendant accompanying the patient allegedly began verbally abusing and threatening doctors and other healthcare staff. The association reported that the individual used vulgar language, claimed political connections to intimidate the medical team, and physically assaulted a security staff member, causing injuries.

The RDA stated that the incident posed a serious threat to the safety of doctors, nurses, security personnel, and other healthcare workers on duty. The association questioned the adequacy of existing security measures at the institute and stressed the need to quickly identify, control, and remove aggressive individuals from critical patient-care zones, including seeking police intervention when required.

In its representation, the resident doctors' body demanded a comprehensive inquiry, an official review of CCTV footage from the emergency ward, proper medical documentation and evaluation of the injured security personnel, and strict medico-legal and police action against the assailant.

The association also called for an investigation into security lapses at the hospital, alongside the deployment of trained security staff, the establishment of a rapid-response mechanism, and stricter regulation of patient attendants inside critical care areas.
