NIMS Hyderabad and IISc Bengaluru Partner to Launch AI Healthcare Project

The Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad has partnered with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, to launch a joint research project on Thursday, 18 June 2026. The collaborative initiative is focused on developing Artificial Intelligence (AI) based healthcare tools to assist medical professionals in India.
The primary objective of the project is to build innovative AI models specifically tailored for Indian patients. These tools are being designed to enable early diagnosis, detailed risk assessment, and personalised treatment plans for several major medical conditions. The diseases targeted under this initiative include breast cancer, oral cancer, kidney diseases, heart ailments, and obesity.
According to Dr P Chandrasekhar, the Dean of NIMS, the benefits of the project extend beyond simply improving diagnostic speed and accuracy. He explained that these AI models will be designed to actively support clinical decision-making and enhance the overall accessibility of medical services for the general public.
To mark the beginning of the collaboration, a team of scientists from IISc Bengaluru visited the NIMS facility in Hyderabad on Thursday. The visiting scientists participated in a series of interactive sessions with the clinical and research teams at NIMS to align on the project's execution.
The research project is structured to progress in phases, with the first phase slated for completion within six months. During this initial six-month period, the joint team will focus on clinical data analysis, algorithm design, and the development of preliminary AI models.
