New He-Man Film Masters of the Universe Debuts to Disappointing Reviews

The highly anticipated Hollywood live-action film Masters of the Universe released in theatres, including screens across Hyderabad, on June 5, 2026, to a largely disappointing response. Directed by Travis Knight, the new He-Man adaptation has struggled to impress due to its goofy tone and weak central conflict, despite boasting high production values and impressive visual effects.

The film stars Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam and features an ensemble cast including Camila Mendes, Alison Brie, James Purefoy, Morena Baccarin, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, Kristen Wiig, Jared Leto, and Idris Elba. Produced by Todd Black and Jason Blumenthal, the movie is the second live-action adaptation of the beloved franchise following the 1987 film.

The storyline follows Prince Adam, who was separated from his home planet of Eternia as a child following an attack by the evil Skeletor, played by Jared Leto. Growing up on Earth, Adam eventually finds his way back home 15 years later, guided by the legendary Sword of Power. Upon discovering that Eternia is now under Skeletor's rule, Adam must embrace his destiny as He-Man to reclaim his kingdom.

While the visual world of Eternia was praised for its grand scale and rich production design, the film's portrayal of its titular hero has drawn significant criticism. Rather than presenting He-Man as a powerful and inspiring figure, the screenplay portrays Prince Adam as a goofy and self-mocking character. Critics noted that this approach stripped the character of his iconic appeal and lowered the emotional stakes of the film.

The conflict between He-Man and Skeletor also reportedly lacked the necessary tension and excitement, failing to deliver strong hero-versus-villain moments. While the film started on a promising note in Eternia, observers noted that it lost momentum once the narrative shifted to Earth, with the screenplay relying too heavily on predictable superhero tropes and repetitive comedy.

Among the positive elements, Idris Elba's performance as Duncan was highlighted as a standout, bringing strength, warmth, and effective comic timing to the film. Nicholas Galitzine was also credited with a sincere effort in the lead role despite the weak writing. The technical team behind the film includes cinematographer Fabian Wagner, editor Paul Rubell, and music director Daniel Pemberton.
