Netflix launches first Telugu original series Super Subbu in Hyderabad

This week, global streaming platform Netflix officially launched its first-ever Telugu original series, 'Super Subbu', in Hyderabad. Directed by Malik Ram, the series marks a significant milestone in the platform's expansion into South Indian regional storytelling, reflecting a strategic, long-term commitment to investing in distinctive local content.
Monika Shergill, the Vice President of Content for Netflix India, shared insights into the platform's vision and Telugu content strategy following the release. Shergill revealed that Netflix has been developing 'Super Subbu' for the last year and a half. She praised director Malik Ram and his creative team for tackling an unusual and unconventional subject, presenting it in a warm, charming, and accessible manner that differs from typical theatrical cinema.
Shergill noted that Telugu audiences have a strong appetite for diverse genres and storytelling formats. She highlighted how local stories have successfully traveled globally, citing Venky Atluri's film 'Lucky Baskhar' and works by celebrated filmmaker SS Rajamouli as key examples of Telugu content that achieved massive success on the platform after their theatrical runs.
The launch of 'Super Subbu' is the first of several planned regional projects. Netflix is currently developing a variety of Telugu originals, including 'Takshakudu', an upcoming folklore-based mystery thriller set in a rural backdrop starring Anand Deverakonda. The streaming service plans to alternate between Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam originals, alongside theatrical acquisitions, to expand its South Indian offerings.
According to Shergill, South India represents a critical growth engine for Netflix, where the platform's audience base continues to grow year after year. She also emphasized the unique strength of South Indian cinema, noting that many directors also write their own projects, which gives them complete clarity over their stories. Netflix intends to continue collaborating with both established and emerging filmmakers to explore fresh, unconventional spaces.
