Nehru Zoological Park Marks World Lion Day With Conservation Talks

World Lion Day was celebrated at the Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad on Sunday to highlight the rapid decline of wild lion populations and promote the conservation of their natural habitats. The occasion, which is marked globally on August 10, featured an anthem dedicated to saving dwindling lion numbers alongside educational talks held at the facility.

Animal caretakers and keepers at the zoo delivered lectures focusing on their daily routines and the management of the big cats. The sessions covered key aspects of animal care, including daily activities, animal behavior, feeding schedules, vaccination routines, and ongoing breeding programs.

J. Muralidhar, Deputy Curator of Nehru Zoological Park, addressed the attendees during the program. He stated that the zoo consistently stays at the forefront of wildlife education and outreach initiatives on every eco-day. Muralidhar thanked the participants for actively attending the World Lion Day celebrations and helping make the educational initiative a success.

The Nehru Zoological Park currently houses both Asiatic and African lions in separate enclosures. The facility introduced the concept of the safari in 1974 when its first lion safari park was established.

Spread over an area of 45 acres, the safari allows a pride of lions to be released daily. This offers visitors the experience of seeing the animals roaming free while human onlookers remain enclosed.
