Nehru Zoological Park Elephants Go on 5-Km Walk for World Elephant Day

Four Asian elephants at the Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad participated in a special nearly five-kilometre walk across the zoo premises on Wednesday to celebrate World Elephant Day. The four jumbos—Vanaja, Asha, Sita, and Vijay—were taken out of their enclosure for the occasion, offering park visitors a rare chance to observe them from close quarters as they moved through the grounds and paused to feed on tree branches along the way.

In addition to the walk, a major highlight of the World Elephant Day celebrations was the presentation of jumbo cakes to the four animals. Each elephant was treated to a five-kilogram cake specially crafted by the zoo's internal team, including in-house animal keepers, feed store personnel, and kitchen staff. The cakes were prepared using a diverse combination of ingredients, including bananas, apples, pineapples, oranges, watermelons, sugarcanes, coconuts, cucumbers, carrots, and cooked rice.

Throughout the event, zoo educational officers and animal keepers engaged with visitors, briefing them on key facts regarding elephants and explaining their critical role in maintaining the ecosystem. Muralidhar, the Deputy Curator of Nehru Zoological Park, expressed pride in hosting the World Elephant Day celebrations, highlighting that the zoo conducts such wildlife education events to foster and spread broader awareness among citizens.
