Nehru Zoological Park Celebrates World Lion Day in Hyderabad

The Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad celebrated World Lion Day on Sunday, organizing educational outreach events to highlight the importance of big cat conservation and emphasize the protection of both Asiatic Lions and African Lions.

As part of the observances, the park conducted interactive animal keeper talk shows for visitors. During these sessions, animal caretakers delivered brief lectures outlining the daily activities carried out at the facility, including detailed explanations of lion behavior, daily feeding routines, vaccination schedules, and ongoing breeding programs designed for the big cats.

Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Curator J Muralidhar stated that the Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad continues to be at the forefront of conducting wildlife education and outreach programs on every designated Eco-Day. Muralidhar noted that the zoo currently houses both Asiatic Lions and African Lions, keeping them in their respective dedicated enclosures.

Highlighting the history of the facility, Muralidhar recalled that the concept of a safari at the zoo was first introduced in 1974, when the initial Lion Safari Park was established across a total area of 45 acres.

Every morning, a pride of lions is released into the 45-acre safari enclosure. Zoo officials noted that this offers a thrilling experience for visitors, operating as a zoo in reverse where the animals roam freely while human beings observe them from inside closed transport vehicles.
