Narsingi Car Registration Cancelled After Minor Caught Driving With SI Grandfather

The Telangana Transport Department has cancelled a vehicle's registration for one year after a minor girl was caught driving the car in Narsingi, with her grandfather, a police Sub-Inspector, sitting in the front passenger seat. The enforcement action, reported on Tuesday, 14 July 2026, follows a viral social media video of the incident that sparked widespread public outrage.

Following the public backlash, the police booked the Sub-Inspector and initiated departmental action against him for allowing the underage driving. Concurrently, the Transport Department took strict action by cancelling the vehicle’s registration for 12 months under Section 199A (4) of the Motor Vehicles Act.

According to a statement issued by the Transport Department on Tuesday, under Section 199A of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 (as amended in 2019), the vehicle owner or guardian is deemed guilty if a minor is caught driving. The department reiterated its zero-tolerance policy against underage driving, noting that traffic norms are often flagrantly violated and repeated advisories on the risks of minors driving are ignored.

The consequences for the minor involved in the Narsingi incident are also severe. Besides the one-year cancellation of the vehicle's registration, the minor girl will not be eligible to obtain a driving licence until she reaches the age of 25.

The department highlighted that this case is part of an ongoing enforcement drive against underage driving across the state. During the last financial year, the Transport Department cancelled 4,070 vehicle registrations across Telangana for permitting minors to drive.

In its official statement, the Transport Department appealed to parents and guardians to refrain from handing over vehicle keys to minors. The department stressed that such violations not only endanger lives but also attract severe legal penalties, including the immediate cancellation of vehicle registration and a prolonged delay in the minor’s eligibility to obtain a driving licence.
