MMC to Expand Aerobin Composting Across Malkajgiri After Peerzadiguda Pilot

The Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation (MMC) announced on 6 July 2026 the expansion of its electricity-free 'Aerobin' composting initiative following a successful pilot project in the Peerzadiguda locality of Hyderabad. The initiative, designed to process wet waste under the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2026, will see 80 new composters installed across selected residential and educational locations starting August 1.
The environmental project is being implemented in the 'Core Urban Region Economy' area under the municipal corporation. To execute the initiative, MMC collaborated with two non-governmental organisations: Modern Architects for Rural India (MARI) and the Swarna Latha Motherson Trust (SLMTT).
The initiative began with a successful pilot project in Peerzadiguda, which involved the installation and operation of five Aerobin composters. These compact units are designed specifically for urban residential settings, such as gated communities, apartment complexes, and bulk waste generators. They convert wet waste into organic manure faster than conventional composting methods. Additionally, the composters are designed to operate without requiring electricity, producing foul odours, or attracting pests like flies and mosquitoes.
Following the success of the pilot, MMC Commissioner Vinay Krishna Reddy stated that the initiative will be implemented in at least one prominent gated community or Residents Welfare Association (RWA) in every circle of the civic body.
According to municipal officials, MARI and MMC will begin installing the 80 new Aerobin units on August 1. These units will be distributed across 15 selected strategic locations, which include 13 residential areas and one educational institution. The original pilot centre in Peerzadiguda will remain operational, serving as a model learning and demonstration centre for the public.
To mark the progress of the project, the MMC Commissioner is scheduled to officially launch the first Aerobin compost harvest on July 10. The launch ceremony will be held at the Parvathapur Integrated Solid Waste Management Park, located in Peerzadiguda.
