Man Rescued After Being Trapped in Hyderabad Building Lift for 90 Minutes

A 40-year-old man was rescued on Sunday morning after becoming trapped between an old lift and the wall of a three-storey building in Hyderabad during an elevator malfunction.

The victim, identified as Murali, was travelling with his wife from the ground floor to the second floor. As he began stepping out of the elevator, the lift unexpectedly moved upwards after someone reportedly pressed the call button from the third floor.

One of Murali's legs remained caught inside the rising lift car while the other was left on the landing. The sudden movement wedged him firmly into the elevator grille between the second and third floors of the structure.

Residents immediately raised an alarm and alerted the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Protection Agency (HYDRAA) control room at approximately 9:15 am. A team from the Disaster Response Force (DRF) arrived at the location by 9:30 am to initiate emergency rescue operations.

During the intervention, rescue personnel were forced to break open portions of the lift structure to access the victim. Fire personnel deployed a hydraulic cutter to slice through the trapped sections and free him from the mechanism.

Emergency workers successfully pulled Murali out at around 10:50 am, concluding a rescue operation that lasted nearly 90 minutes. He suffered a leg fracture during the incident and was immediately shifted to a local hospital, where he is currently undergoing medical treatment.

According to HYDRAA officials, the incident involved an ageing elevator system whose sensors were reportedly not functioning properly at the time of the mishap.
