Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka Launches Anti-Drug Campaign At Shilpakala Vedika

The Telangana government intensified its campaign for a drug-free state during a large-scale awareness programme held at Shilpakala Vedika on Friday to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, who attended as the chief guest, reaffirmed the state's determination to dismantle drug networks and protect the youth from addiction.

The event was organised by Eagle Force Telangana in association with the Department for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Senior Citizens and Transgender Persons. Several state ministers, including Ponnam Prabhakar, Duddilla Sridhar Babu, and Adluri Laxman Kumar, participated alongside police officials and celebrities.

Addressing the gathering, Deputy Chief Minister Vikramarka emphasized that laws alone cannot eliminate the drug menace without active societal change. He urged educational institutions, teachers, parents, public representatives, and celebrities to work collectively to discourage drug abuse. He also suggested that short anti-drug video messages by film personalities could positively influence young people.

Minister Ponnam Prabhakar described drug addiction as a serious social evil threatening the younger generation. He called on citizens to become "soldiers" in the campaign, advocating for counselling and rehabilitation instead of isolating those battling addiction.

Providing operational updates, EAGLE Director Sandeep Shandilya stated that the wing has expanded its awareness campaigns and strengthened enforcement across Telangana. He revealed that the government has equipped the wing with specialised vehicles and advanced drug detection equipment.

According to Shandilya, EAGLE identified 822 students in drug-related cases during 2024, while approximately 600 drug users were identified and counselled. He stressed that counselling and rehabilitation are as vital as strict law enforcement.

The event also featured the screening of short films and awareness videos showcasing the dangers of drug abuse. Prominent figures, including actor Ram Pothineni, actress Meenakshi Chaudhary, and international artistic gymnast Budda Aruna Reddy, shared messages encouraging youth to choose healthy, disciplined lifestyles.

Additionally, students who won drawing and essay-writing competitions held as part of the campaign were presented with prizes and certificates.
