Lokesh Kanagaraj Shifts Focus to Acting as Kaithi 2 Faces Delays

South Indian film director Lokesh Kanagaraj has shifted his focus from filmmaking to taking up acting roles, raising concerns in the South Indian film industry on May 31, 2026, about his commitment to directing and the future of his highly anticipated film Kaithi 2.

Kanagaraj was previously regarded as one of the most exciting filmmakers in South Indian cinema, particularly within Kollywood. He earned immense respect and popularity across the entire South Indian film industry through his unique storytelling style, gripping screenplays, and the creation of a successful cinematic universe. His reputation was built on delivering major blockbuster films, including Kaithi, Vikram, and Leo.

However, public and industry perceptions began to change following the release of his film Coolie. The movie failed to meet the massive expectations surrounding its release and was widely viewed as a disappointment by many of his fans.

Rather than immediately moving forward with the production of Kaithi 2, Kanagaraj has chosen to shift his attention toward multiple acting projects. Among these is an acting role in DC. Additionally, he made a cameo appearance in the film Kattalan and is reportedly under consideration for a full-fledged villain role in its upcoming sequel.

This series of back-to-back acting assignments has sparked worry among his followers. Fans are concerned that his primary strength as a filmmaker may gradually weaken if his acting commitments continue to increase. Many believe that his acting ventures should not come at the cost of his established directorial brilliance.

Meanwhile, the status of Kaithi 2 remains highly uncertain. Reports suggest that progress on the film is not moving smoothly between the concerned parties.

As a result of these delays and his acting pursuits, Kanagaraj's upcoming directorial project with actor Allu Arjun has become the biggest source of hope for both the director and his fans. That project is expected to begin next year.
