KIMS Cuddles Kondapur Doctors Treat 28-Day-Old Infant for Airway Narrowing

Doctors at KIMS Cuddles in Kondapur have successfully treated a 28-day-old infant suffering from severe breathing difficulty caused by a critical narrowing of the airway. The medical team performed an endoscopic balloon dilatation procedure, enabling the baby to breathe normally without undergoing a tracheostomy.

The infant was brought to the hospital presenting with severe respiratory distress, chest retractions, and noisy breathing. Following birth, the baby was unable to breathe immediately and had previously required ventilator support for seven days.

A medical evaluation conducted inside the operation theatre revealed that the infant was suffering from Grade 2 subglottic stenosis, a condition characterized by the narrowing of the airway located directly below the vocal cords.

To resolve the blockage without invasive surgical cutting into the windpipe, the surgical team opted for endoscopic balloon dilatation. During the intervention, a specialized 6-mm balloon was utilized to dilate the narrowed segment.

According to ENT Surgeon Dr. Priyanka Valluri, the procedure was performed three times using a controlled technique. Following the dilatation, the infant's airway opened adequately, allowing air to pass freely and restoring normal respiration.
