Kazipet Railway Manufacturing Unit to build 200 next-gen intercity trains

The Kazipet Railway Manufacturing Unit in Telangana is set to emerge as a key national hub for next-generation intercity trains, with construction on the site now 95 percent complete. The new facility, which is being established at a cost of Rs 521 crore, is expected to be fully completed within the next few months, with train production scheduled to commence by the end of this year.
To facilitate this, the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai is expected to float tenders shortly for the manufacturing of the new intercity coaches at the Kazipet facility. This development marks a major milestone in Telangana’s railway manufacturing ambitions, positioning the state as a critical centre for passenger rolling stock manufacturing in India.
Over the next five years, Indian Railways has set a target to manufacture nearly 200 of these next-generation intercity trainsets at the Kazipet site. Once production officially begins, the Telangana-based facility will become one of the country's premier hubs for passenger rolling stock.
The newly designed trains are engineered for a maximum operating speed of 130 kmph. They are specifically intended for short and medium-distance journeys of approximately 300 km. The introduction of these trainsets aims to provide faster and more comfortable rail connectivity between neighbouring towns and major cities across the country, including Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, and Bengaluru.
With construction work at the Kazipet Railway Manufacturing Unit almost finished, the final phases of development will wrap up in the coming months, clearing the way for production to start before the year concludes.
