Jurala Dam Gates Closed in Jogulamba Gadwal as Inflows Drop to 80,000 Cusecs

Officials at the Jurala project in Jogulamba Gadwal district closed the dam gates on Sunday, August 9, 2026, following a decline in flood inflows. The reduction in water coming into the reservoir follows a decrease in rainfall across Maharashtra and Karnataka, which subsequently led to reduced discharges from the upstream Almatti and Narayanpur dams.

The gate closure comes after substantial quantities of water were released downstream over the past few days. Flood inflows into the Jurala reservoir currently stand at 80,000 cusecs, while 39,608 cusecs of water is being discharged downstream. Hydro-electric power generation continues uninterrupted across all six units using the water released downstream.

Project officials declared that water will not be released for agricultural activities following the drop in inflows. The Jurala project provides water to nearly 1.03 lakh acres of land through its left and right canals. Authorities noted that releasing water for farming at this stage would adversely impact drinking water supplies in the coming season, prompting the decision to protect municipal supply.

The current water level at Jurala stands at 317.51 metres against its full reservoir level of 318.51 metres. The dam holds 7.66 TMC of water against its total storage capacity of 9.65 TMC. Officials noted that the lower releases from Jurala are expected to lead to a corresponding decline in inflows into the downstream Srisailam project.
