Investment Frauds Cause 60% of Cybercrime Losses in Telangana, TGCSB Says

Stock trading and business investment frauds account for nearly 60 per cent of all financial losses suffered by cybercrime victims in Telangana, making them the primary focus of a statewide awareness push launched in Hyderabad.

The statistics were highlighted during the ‘Suraksha Ka Tiranga – Towards a Cyber Independent Telangana’ programme organised by the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) ahead of Independence Day. The campaign was designed to promote vigilance, informed online decision-making, and safe digital practices among citizens across the state.

Addressing the gathering, Director General of Police C.V. Anand stated that an alert and informed public remains the strongest defence against online fraud. He urged citizens to pause and verify credentials before transferring money or sharing personal information online. Anand noted that victims can report fraudulent incidents to the police by calling the helpline number 1930 or through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.

TGCSB Director Shikha Goel announced that cybercrime complaints across India rose by 24 per cent in 2025, but Telangana recorded a three per cent decline during the same period. Furthermore, financial losses in the state fell by 20.2 per cent, compared to a modest three per cent reduction recorded nationally.

According to Goel, this downward trend strengthened in the first half of 2026, with complaints in Telangana declining by 10.2 per cent and total financial losses dropping by 26.8 per cent. Law enforcement also improved fund recovery mechanisms, increasing the proportion of disputed funds placed on hold from 21 per cent to 29 per cent.

Telangana also achieved the top rank nationally in the PRAGATI review, which evaluates states across nine cybercrime performance parameters. These include the implementation and use of specialised platforms such as Samanvaya, Sahyog, the Money Recovery Module, and the Grievance Redressal Module. Goel urged citizens to report fraudulent activities during the critical ‘Golden Hour’ to maximise the probability of recovering lost funds.
