IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Across Telangana
The India Meteorological Department on Sunday issued a yellow alert forecasting three days of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds across several districts of Telangana, including Hyderabad, Medchal-Malkajgiri, and Sangareddy. The alert follows a sustained downpour that began late on Saturday night and continued through the weekend holiday.
According to the IMD forecast, isolated locations within Hyderabad along with neighbouring Rangareddy, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Medak, and Kamareddy districts could witness thunderstorms with winds gusting up to 50 kmph on Monday. The weather bureau noted that similar atmospheric conditions are expected to prevail across these areas on Tuesday.
The forecast also covers Adilabad, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagtial, Rajanna Sircilla, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Mahbubabad, Warangal, and Hanamkonda districts. Additionally, the yellow alert holds for northern districts including Komuram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Karimnagar, Peddapalli, and Jayashankar Bhupalpally, where heavy rainfall is anticipated. A low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal persisted on Sunday, which could also bring heavy rains over north coastal Andhra Pradesh.
For Hyderabad, the weather agency forecast light to moderate rainfall across all city zones on Tuesday, shifting to light rainfall under partly cloudy skies on Wednesday. On Sunday, an orange warning was issued for Kamareddy, Mahbubnagar, Medak, Sangareddy, and Vikarabad districts, resulting in moderate to heavy rainfall.
Rainfall figures from the Telangana Development Planning Society showed that Nizampet in Sangareddy recorded the highest rainfall on Sunday at 75.3 mm. In Kamareddy district, Pitlam recorded 61.8 mm, while Sirgapoor and Kalher in Sangareddy received 56 mm and 52.5 mm of rainfall respectively.
Within the GHMC, CMC, and MMC jurisdictions, Vinayaknagar in Malkajgiri recorded the highest precipitation on Sunday at 52.3 mm, followed by Kistareddypet in Ameenpur with 24 mm and Keesara with 21.8 mm. Overnight from Saturday, the city recorded an average rainfall of 22.8 mm, with Shaikpet and the MMTS Lingampally station logging the highest levels at 43.3 mm.
