IIT Hyderabad Study Finds City Residents Distrust Public Water Supply

A sociological study conducted by the Centre for Sustainable Development at IIT Hyderabad has revealed that residents across Hyderabad widely distrust state-supplied public water. The research highlighted growing concerns among local citizens over water quality, which has led to a rising dependence on domestic purification systems and increasing anxiety over environmental degradation.
The study, titled 'Filtering for Purity: Middle Class Attitudes to Water in Urban India', was conducted by researchers Haripriya Narasimhan and Kanaka Himabindu Pottumuthu. The academic paper examined how residents from different socio-economic groups manage their daily water needs in Hyderabad. The research specifically looked at households living in independent houses and gated communities.
Through this study, the researchers sought to understand the precise ways in which urban households in Hyderabad procure, evaluate, and consume water on a daily basis. Additionally, the research analyzed how these daily water practices and consumption habits shape the residents' overall perceptions of urban life.
The findings of the research point to a significant shift in the way city residents view their water supply. According to the study, access to safe and reliable water has transitioned into a central determinant of the quality of life for residents, rather than being viewed merely as a civic utility issue.
Researchers Narasimhan and Pottumuthu found that everyday water management in Hyderabad is heavily influenced by sensory perceptions. Local residents regularly assess the quality of their water based on physical characteristics, with residents evaluating the water based on its taste, its smell, its colour, and its perceived purity.
The study noted that this close sensory scrutiny by households stems directly from a persistent scepticism towards the quality of state-provided water. This lack of trust in the state-provided public supply has ultimately driven a tremendous dependence on various domestic purification systems among the Hyderabad residents.
