IIT Hyderabad Climbs 76 Places to Rank 588th Globally in QS World University Rankings

The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT-H), located in Sangareddy, secured the 588th position globally in the QS World University Rankings 2027. The ranking, announced on Thursday, June 18, 2026, marks a significant leap from the previous year, when the institute was ranked 664th globally.

According to an official press release from the institute, this improvement of 76 ranks reflects its growing international recognition for research excellence, innovation-led education, and impactful technology development.

A major contributor to the rise was the institute's exceptional performance in the citations per faculty indicator. In this specific parameter, IIT-H achieved a global rank of 123, placing it among the world's leading research-intensive institutions. The institute's score in the citations per faculty indicator rose to 86.8, highlighting the increasing influence and global visibility of research produced by its faculty and scholars.

The 2027 rankings also indicated improvements across several other key parameters for the Sangareddy-based institute. These parameters included academic reputation, employer reputation, employment outcomes, and sustainability.

With these gains, IIT-H's overall score increased to 28.7. Its relative global performance improved from 55.9 percent to 61 percent, meaning the institute now outperforms more than 61 percent of all ranked universities worldwide.

This achievement continues a steady upward trajectory for the institution over the past few years. IIT-H previously ranked in the 691–700 band in 2024, moved up to 664th in the 2026 rankings, and has now reached 588th globally for the 2027 edition.

Prof. B. S. Murty, Director of IIT-H, stated that the QS World University Rankings 2027 validation reflects the institute's aggressive focus on deep-tech innovation, translational research, and a robust academic ecosystem. He credited the success to the relentless faculty, passionate researchers, and dedicated students, noting that as a relatively young institute, they remain focused on scaling international collaborations and industry footprints.
