HYDRAA Appeals High Court Order To Remove Fencing At Edulakunta Lake In Khanamet

The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) has filed an appeal against a Telangana High Court interim order that directed the removal of fencing around Edulakunta lake in Khanamet village, Serilingampally mandal. The appeal, filed on June 2, defends the agency's actions to protect the water body and adjoining government land following a court directive issued on May 29, 2026.

According to HYDRAA, the decision to fence and protect the area was based on official village and revenue records, Survey of India maps, satellite imagery, and physical field inspections. All available records identify Edulakunta, which is spread over 6.05 acres in Survey No. 7 of Khanamet village in Rangareddy district, as a lake.

The agency stated that flood channels linking Thammidikunta to Edulakunta, along with outlet channels connecting Edulakunta to Sunnam Cheruvu, further establish the area's status as an active water body. HYDRAA informed the High Court that the fencing was erected solely to protect and restore the lake, consistent with similar environmental restoration works being undertaken across the city.

The action followed written requests from Revenue department officials on May 25 and 26, who sought the protection of 5.06 acres of government land in Survey No. 11/37/A at Khanamet. Acting on this official request, HYDRAA erected the fencing on May 26.

Following the High Court's interim order on May 29, 2026, which directed the removal of the fencing, HYDRAA filed its appeal (LPA SR No. 25414/2026) on June 2 to present the factual position. The agency also wrote to the Rangareddy collector on May 30 to obtain additional information and is currently awaiting a response.

HYDRAA maintained that restoring local lakes is essential for flood mitigation, groundwater recharge, and environmental protection. The agency asserted that its actions are intended exclusively to safeguard public assets and government-owned land.
