Hyderabad Traffic Police Book 149 Auto Drivers for Overloading School Children

The Hyderabad traffic police booked 149 cases against auto-rickshaw drivers for carrying school children beyond the permitted capacity and registered two cases for drunk driving during a special safety drive across Hyderabad. The enforcement drive, which commenced on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, was launched to ensure the safety and security of school students in the city.
According to the authorities, the special drive was initiated to crack down on school transport vehicles carrying children beyond their permitted seating capacity, as well as drivers operating under the influence of alcohol.
Joint Commissioner (Traffic) Joel Davis stated that traffic police teams have been actively checking school buses, vans, and auto-rickshaws across the city for overloading, drunken driving, and other traffic violations.
Since the commencement of the drive on June 16, the Hyderabad Traffic Police inspected a total of 1,852 school vehicles. During these inspections, officers identified 149 auto-rickshaws that were carrying school students in excess of their legal seating limits.
Furthermore, the police registered two cases against auto-rickshaw drivers who were found to be transporting school children while under the influence of alcohol.
In light of these violations, the Hyderabad traffic police appealed to parents to be vigilant. The department urged parents not to send their children to school in transport vehicles that exceed their permitted passenger capacity, warning that overcrowding poses a serious risk to the safety and lives of the students.
