Hyderabad Scientists Develop High-Yielding Protein-Rich Vegetable Cowpea Variety

On 4 July 2026, the Sri Konda Laxman Telangana State Horticultural University (SKLTGHU) in Hyderabad announced the release of a new protein-rich, short-duration vegetable cowpea variety. This development marks the university's very first vegetable variety released since the formation of Telangana state.
The new variety was developed by a dedicated scientific team at the university under the leadership of genetics and plant breeding expert Dr. Pidigam Saidaiah. The team also included Dr. Nikhil and Dr. Anitha Kumari. The State Variety Release Committee has officially approved the variety for cultivation.
This newly developed cowpea is a bush-type, photo-insensitive variety, which means it is suitable for cultivation during both the Kharif and Rabi seasons. It is designed for quick cultivation, maturing for its first harvest in just 50 to 55 days. Within a total span of 85 days, it yields an average of 7 to 8 tonnes of fresh vegetable cowpea pods per acre.
The physical characteristics of the pods make them highly practical for harvesting and consumption. The light green pods measure between 15 and 20 centimetres in length and do not require any stringing or de-stringing.
Furthermore, the variety offers strong crop resilience as it is resistant to the yellow mosaic virus, which is locally known as the pallaaku disease.
Nutritionally, the new cowpea variety is highly beneficial. The pods contain 22 percent protein and are rich in essential nutrients including fibre, iron, calcium, magnesium, and potassium. It is also characterized by a high phenol content.
Commenting on the release, SKLTGHU Vice Chancellor Dr. Danda Raji Reddy stated that the new variety developed by the university offers high yields within a short duration. He added that because it is rich in protein and fibre and suitable for year-round cultivation, it is a variety that ensures net profits for farmers.
